From Volunteer to Future OT: My Summer at GiGi’s Playhouse

When I think about GiGi’s Playhouse, one word immediately comes to mind: joy. Time and time again, I leave the playhouse with a huge smile on my face. Everyone who walks in the door is immediately surrounded by love and support. The volunteers, staff, and board members are deeply passionate about what they do, and the participants and their families radiate a strong sense of belonging and gratitude.

I first volunteered at GiGi’s Playhouse with my mom a few years ago, and we quickly realized just how incredible the organization is. This summer, I decided to dive deeper, and it was one of the best decisions of my life.

I began volunteering with the Fantastic Friends program, which focuses on social skills and language development for adults with Down syndrome, while being in a welcoming and positive environment. I fell in love with engaging with the participants, who are some of the most caring and determined people I have ever met.

Soon after, I began 1-on-1 literacy tutoring with an eight-year-old girl who was initially hesitant to read independently. We spent our sessions learning new phonograms, matching words with pictures, and reading books. Her love for reading quickly grew, and in some of our later sessions, she wanted to stay longer to spend more time with the books. I will never forget the smile on her face as she read aloud new words and put her hand up in the air for a high-five. Her excitement to learn and grow was inspiring and made my day every single time.

Throughout the summer, I was able to help with a variety of programs for kids and adults of all ages, such as Music Makers, GiGi’s Kitchen, LMNOP, and summer camps. Each program creates an inclusive space where participants can grow their motor skills, social skills, and language through purposeful activities, all while fostering a fun, engaging, and supportive environment. The participants consistently demonstrate resilience in the face of challenges, which has also helped shape the way I approach my own chronic illnesses.

Beyond the weekly programs, the GiGi’s Playhouse community brings a unique joy and enthusiasm to special events. One of my favorite activities was making jellyfish out of seashells and yarn at the Taste of GiGi’s event. It was incredible to see the community come together to welcome new families and highlight what the playhouse has to offer.

Looking forward

Before this summer, I did not know much about occupational therapy, but my time at GiGi’s has inspired me to pursue a career as an occupational therapist, and I could not be more excited! This switch may not have happened without the impact the participants have had on my outlook on life. They know what it means to overcome barriers, and they have truly inspired me.

I am thrilled that my involvement with GiGi’s Playhouse will continue while I am back at college this semester. Starting this fall, I will be leading a Destination Discovery program in Chapel Hill for kids with Down syndrome. I am looking forward to fun sessions filled with crafts, music, books, and lots of smiles.

I am beyond grateful to be a part of the GiGi’s Playhouse family. Thank you to all of the volunteers and staff who pour their love into the playhouse–it shows tremendously. And thank you to all of the participants and families who have welcomed me with open arms; you have truly made a lasting impact on my life.
