Inspiring Moments from the 2023 GiGi’s National Conference

On November 2nd, the Portland GiGi’s Board Members, Brad and Niki Johnston and Kristal Watts, embarked on an inspiring journey to the 2023 GiGi’s National Conference – held just outside of Chicago in Itasca, Illinois.

The trip was an embodiment of GiGi’s core values:

  • Being Enthusiastic, Best of All: A quest for constant improvement
  • Get It Done: A belief in individuals with Down syndrome and their families
  • Being Locally Concerned and Enterprise-Minded: A belief in the power of community

The Portland team had the privilege of collaborating with over 58 playhouses, including four slated to open in 2024 – one of these being our Achievement Center on Apple Way in Beaverton. The breakout sessions and workshops covered an array of topics – from data management, social media, and volunteer support to HR, marketing, fundraising, leadership training, and more. The immense exchange of knowledge and experiences was truly empowering.

One of the many highlights included an evening get-together at the first GiGi’s Playhouse in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Everyone was so excited to be sharing ideas and perspectives, glad to have the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and strengthen the bonds of this incredible network.

The grand finale was a night of celebration, where outstanding playhouses were recognized.  The attendees dined, danced, and celebrated alongside self-advocates – individuals of all ages living with Down syndrome. It was a night of encouragement, enthusiasm, and pure joy.

The financial and in-person support of LuMind IDSC and the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) further highlighted the significance of this conference, underlining the collective effort toward the betterment of the Down syndrome community.

As a bonus, the Portland team was among the first to hear the heartwarming announcement of Matthew Schwab’s (Raleigh Playhouse Board Member living with Down syndrome – check out his website to learn more) engagement to his fiancé Lydia, which added a touch of romance to the festivities.

In Itasca, the Portland team witnessed the power of the GiGi’s community, with its unwavering dedication to the core values of Inspire, Educate, and Believe. The experience was a testament to the transformative impact that collaboration, empowerment, and engagement can have on individuals and communities alike. Our journey reinvigorated the team and inspired us to continue our mission toward our Grand Opening in 2024.
