GiGi’s Playhouse Speaks Out

At GiGi’s Playhouse, we tend to focus on the positives. We spend most of our time celebrating achievements, building acceptance, and changing the way the world views Down syndrome. 

But when misinformation spreads and harmful assumptions about individuals with Down syndrome are amplified to millions of people, silence is not an option. 

 We’ve heard from families, advocates, and supporters across our community who are frustrated by the spread of recent misinformation online and the misconceptions it reinforces. Below is our official statement: 

Recent public conversations, surrounding a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome have highlighted something we see far too often: misinformation, outdated assumptions, and a profound misunderstanding of what life with Down syndrome actually looks like today. 

EVERY LIFE HAS VALUE 

At GiGi’s Playhouse, our mission has never been political. Our mission is people. 

Every day, we walk alongside thousands of individuals with Down syndrome and their families. We celebrate first words, first steps, graduations, jobs, friendships, athletic achievements, artistic accomplishments, independent living milestones, and countless moments of joy that often go unseen by the broader world. 

We recognize that receiving a prenatal diagnosis can be overwhelming. Families deserve compassion, accurate information, and support as they process unexpected news. 

They also deserve the truth. 

The truth is that Down syndrome is not a prediction of a person’s worth, potential, happiness, or ability to contribute to the world. 

The truth is that individuals with Down syndrome are students, employees, artists, athletes, advocates, friends, siblings, sons, daughters, husbands, wives, and community leaders. 

The truth is that while some individuals experience medical challenges, advances in healthcare, education, early intervention, and community support have dramatically changed outcomes and quality of life. 

The truth is that no diagnosis can fully predict what any one person’s life will become. 

At GiGi’s Playhouse, we reject the notion that a life with Down syndrome is somehow less valuable, less meaningful, or less deserving of celebration. 

• We believe every individual deserves to be seen first as a person—not a diagnosis. 
• We believe every family deserves support, hope, and access to accurate information. 
• And we believe that individuals with Down syndrome belong in our schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, churches, communities, and hearts. 

Every day, the individuals we serve challenge assumptions about ability, achievement, independence, and success. They remind us that human value is not measured by chromosomes, IQ scores, productivity, or perfection. 

It is measured by something much more fundamental: our shared humanity. 

• Our commitment remains unwavering. 
• We will continue to champion acceptance. 
• We will continue to celebrate achievement. 
• We will continue to advocate for dignity. 

And we will continue to ensure that every person with Down syndrome knows they are valued, they are capable, and they belong.
