Local Girl Scout Troop Visits to Learn, Connect and Advocate for Inclusion

Girl Scout Troop 38060 recently had the meaningful opportunity to visit GiGi’s Playhouse Milwaukee, where they spent time learning about our mission, the individuals we serve, and how they can become advocates for inclusion. The Girl Scouts in this troop are in 1st and 2nd grade. They attend school at Maryland Avenue Montessori and the German Immersion School. This special visit was initiated by GiGi’s Playhouse family members Kristy Eyler and Tom Johnston, their son, GiGi’s participant Myron Johnston and his sister, Girl Scout Maude Johnston. Their efforts brought the troop together for a day centered on education, empathy, and community connection.

During the visit, Kristy read a children’s story about Down syndrome, helping to introduce the girls to the topic in an engaging and age-appropriate way. Becky, our Program and Volunteer Coordinator, then shared more about what Down syndrome is, the mission of GiGi’s Playhouse, and our Generation G initiative, which stands for “Be Accepting, Be Generous, Be Kind.” The troop also participated in hands-on activities designed to give them a small glimpse into what it might feel like to write, hear, and speak with some of the challenges that individuals with Down syndrome may experience, while emphasizing that every individual is unique and no two experiences are the same.

Throughout the visit, the conversation continually returned to the importance of acceptance and inclusion. The Girl Scouts asked thoughtful questions, shared their reflections, and explored ways they can actively practice kindness and advocacy in their everyday lives. Experiences like this help build a more inclusive future, and we are so grateful to Troop 38060, the Johnston family, and all who made this outreach possible for their commitment to learning, understanding, and spreading acceptance in their community.
