Empowering Families: Practical Guidance on Puberty from Terri C.
We were honored to welcome Terri Couwenhoven, M.S., AASECT Certified Sex Educator, to GiGi’s Playhouse Milwaukee for an incredibly meaningful workshop focused on the top issues and concerns families face during puberty. Many of our GiGi’s Playhouse Milwaukee families joined us both in-person and virtually, demonstrating just how important and timely this topic is for parents and caregivers of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Terri created a warm, open environment where families felt comfortable asking questions, sharing experiences, and gaining practical guidance.
During the workshop, Terri addressed the most frequently identified concerns that arise during puberty and offered clear, practical strategies families can begin using right away. She shared thoughtful ideas for teaching self-care, promoting healthy boundaries, and supporting positive body awareness at home and in the community. Her approach emphasizes dignity, respect, and proactive education, empowering families to build confidence in their children while navigating what can sometimes feel like an overwhelming stage of development.
We are deeply grateful to Terri for the expertise, compassion, and clarity she brings to this important work. By equipping families with accurate information and practical tools, she helps ensure that individuals with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities receive the education and support they deserve. Thank you, Terri, for partnering with GiGi’s Playhouse Milwaukee and for your continued dedication to strengthening families through education, understanding, and encouragement.
