A Journey to Independence: Gwen’s Story
Gwen Friedman has been a familiar face in our community for many years. Our dedicated volunteer, Bert, has known Gwen for a long time, as have many of our adult participants. I, too, have had the pleasure of knowing Gwen personally—I lived nearby and often gave her rides to the day program she attended at the time.
Over the years, Bert has remained close to Gwen and her family, following her inspiring journey toward independence. Today, Gwen resides at the Marbridge Community, just outside of Austin, Texas. One day, Bert had a wonderful idea—why not make Gwen our official pen pal? It was the perfect way for our adult participants at the Playhouse to stay connected, share experiences, and support one another.
Gwen’s desire for independence was sparked by watching her siblings go off to college and live on their own. She longed for a similar experience, a life where she could grow and thrive on her own terms. Recognizing this, her parents worked to help her achieve that goal. After being on a waiting list, they finally received the life-changing call—there was an opening at Marbridge, and it was time for Gwen to take the next step.
The transition wasn’t easy. Moving away from her family, friends, and the familiar life she had built in Houston came with its challenges. But Gwen faced them with resilience, gradually adapting to her new surroundings and embracing the opportunities that came with her independence.
Her story is a testament to perseverance, the support of loved ones, and the power of community. And thanks to Bert’s thoughtful initiative, Gwen continues to stay connected with her extended Playhouse family, inspiring others with her journey.
