First Semester Wrap Up!

At Fox Valley we have had wonderful interns this past semester who have really helped us in our program growth, development, and bringing the fun! We sat down with Aurora University Social Work intern Makayla to hear about her experience as an intern at GiGi’s Playhouse:

1. Where are you from and how long have you lived in Aurora?
   1. I’m from Gurnee IL and I have lived in Aurora for 3.5 years or so now. I have been attending Aurora University since January of 2015. I will be graduating in May with plans to move to Florida post graduation!
2. How did you get involved in GiGi’s?
   1. My little cousin has Down Syndrome and he has inspired me to get involved in working with children with Down Syndrome. Once I saw that GiGi’s was a possible site placement for my year long internship it was the only one I applied to!
3. Why did you decide to become a social worker?
   1. I decided to become a social worker because I love helping others, especially groups that need extra assistance in the community. I also have a minor in sign language which I would love to use in the future. My ideal population is working with children with disabilities.
4. What is your most fond memory so far with GiGi’s Playhouse?
   1. Working with my literacy student Ryan has been amazing! I have loved to see him grow and develop from the first session to the last. It has been great to watch our relationship get stronger! I have also loved the family fun nights I have attended. Getting to see all the kids have fun together is great! They are a great way to meet all the kids and recognize more of our families!
5. What do you like to do in your spare time?
   1. I babysit and have another job as a server so that takes up a lot of my time! I like to watch Netflix to relax and unwind after a long day. I also like traveling to Florida to visit my sister and going to Gurnee to see my family!
