Teri’s Why

Doing what the Johnson’s do best, cheering on the “Sioux”!

Since having our son, Blake, who has Down Syndrome, I’ve learned there is an unique bond between parents raising these special children.  We would be out in the community and encounter another parent with a child with Down Syndrome and our eyes would meet and we’d smile.  We’d smile because we both knew we were blessed beyond most.

Now that Blake is an adult, I especially notice those families with babies and younger children that have Down Syndrome.  I want to tell them how bright their future is and curb any fears they may have.

When I was approached to serve as a founding board member for GiGi’s Playhouse, I saw it as an opportunity to have a place for families to celebrate their child and provide them with free programming that would help them be their best self.  I didn’t realize how much it would benefit Blake and other adults with Down Syndrome.  He is taking part in the programming at GiGi’s and continues to advance his skills.  Skills that have helped him be more confident in his job and social situations.

I am thrilled to be part of GiGi’s, breaking down barriers and changing the way the world accepts individuals with Down Syndrome.
