Kristin’s Why

Kristin and her son, Birk.

I will never forget the day we found out our son Birk, had Down syndrome.  I was overcome with so many emotions, but the strongest was the feeling of being all alone on this journey.

Kristin, the founder of GiGi’s Playhouse in Fargo, and Marijo at GiGi’s first Buddy Walk – the fundraiser to bring GiGi’s to Fargo!

One night when Birk was about 2 years old, I was online looking at different resources about

Birk hitching a ride from Dad during the 1 mile walk.

Down syndrome.  It was then that I came across GiGi’s Playhouse.  I remember running out of the office to tell my husband that I had finally found what I wanted to do when I grew up!  From that night on, it was a dream of mine to help bring a GiGi’s Playhouse to the Fargo community.  I wanted a place where other families could come and not feel alone.  With the help of other involved parents and our supportive community, we were able to raise enough money to open our doors.

Now we have a place where individuals and families can go and feel included and accepted. The programs at GiGi’s are research-based and designed to meet their learning needs.    GiGi’s is a place that shows our community that there is no limit to what people with Down syndrome can accomplish.  I am excited to be a part of this organization that has touched the lives of so many in our community!!
