Sister Love: Celebrating Down Syndrome Awareness Month
Guest blogger: Elisa Kim, age 16
I have a younger sister with Down syndrome. More often than not, people think having a relative with Down syndrome is a burden or a challenge. This is not the case at all! Having a sister with Down syndrome is one of the most amazing things that has happened in my life.
Those who have a narrowed mindset strengthen and spread a negative image, that individuals with Down syndrome aren’t able to do certain things. They believe most activities are too challenging, scary, or just too much for them to do. I continually push my sister to reach her full potential and overcome those perceived “limitations”.
One of the biggest challenges I’ve noticed with my sister, and many other individuals with Down syndrome, is communication. They are often misunderstood, overlooked, ignored, and even excluded from various communities. To overcome this barrier, I engage in a full conversation with my younger sister every day. For example, at the dinner table, my family takes turns asking her questions about her day. This helps boost her confidence in speaking, and includes her in our discussions. It’s the small steps that make the biggest impact.
This month I really want to take the time and appreciate everything my little sister has taught me and the amazing experiences I’ve had with her over the past 15 years. If you’re lucky enough to come across someone who has Down syndrome, please remember they are more than what others might perceive.
