Program Spotlight: Art Explosion

Art is all around us,

…even if we’re not always aware of it. From observing a painting in a museum or street art in the community, to funky clothing, creative hairstyles, or the sky’s colors unfolding at sunset, art is a beautiful and critical part of life. The benefits of making art are innumerable, which is why we created Art Explosion!

At GiGi’s Playhouse each program has a therapeutic or educational focus, so even if it appears the participants are just having fun, they are also learning and experiencing therapy at the same time. In Art Explosion we explore techniques across several different mediums, including paint, markers, crayons, modeling clay, and more. It provides a hands-on creative outlet for individuals with Down syndrome to express themselves, gain confidence, and socialize with peers.

Like everyone in the world, people with Down syndrome have a unique way of looking at life, and their art reflects those experiences. Research shows they are often highly visual thinkers. Expressing feelings and ideas through images can be a welcome relief, especially when verbal communication is difficult. Art is also a sensory experience, and can utilize fine motor skills, hand/eye coordination, and cognitive functioning. Creating art in a group setting enhances social skills through positive peer interaction, sharing inspiration, and supporting one another. Along with the development of new skills comes increased self-esteem – the most important element to all Playhouse programs!

Each month our dedicated program leader, Demetris Stewart, prepares a new project for participants. She encourages fun and freedom, and invites everyone to let loose and unlock their creativity!

Art Explosion is recommended for ages 8+, and friends of all abilities are welcome! We hope you’ll join us, every 2nd Sunday of the month, from 2:30 – 3:30pm.
