What Does World Down Syndrome Day Mean to a Parent?

I am about two and half years into my journey since Luccia’s prenatal diagnosis and this perspective has evolved significantly. My initial thoughts and feelings were filled with fear…how could I raise a sick child with special needs? I needed to learn acceptance, patience, and courage. What I already possessed was love. I knew I loved Luccia the very moment I found out I was pregnant. That love did not waiver with a diagnosis of Down syndrome. My love for her grew when I held her the first moments of her life and every day since then. Loving Luccia has come so naturally and taught me so very much. Acceptance of the obstacles we encounter. Patience to manage a hectic schedule of appointments and therapy while maintaining a family life and juggling adult responsibilities. Courage to deal with the unpredictability of the future and be present in the moment.

Down syndrome is not scary. Is the journey always ideal? Not necessarily, but with each step something greater seemingly prevails. “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.” – Moulin Rouge

Luccia has taught me an infinite love and her love is purely reciprocal.
