Volunteer Spotlight: Maris Madderom

Tell us about yourself!

Hello! My name is Maris Madderom and I have been tutoring at GiGi’s since 2020. I did in fact start my GiGi’s journey during covid so my first few literacy sessions were all virtual!

I got involved with GiGi’s after hearing about their wonderful programs and how much of an impact they make in peoples’ lives. One of my friends growing up went to GiGi’s for their programs so that also was a factor in deciding to start volunteering here 🙂

What’s your favorite part about volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse?

My favorite part about volunteering at GiGi’s is the friendships I have made along the way! Getting to know the individuals I tutor and building a connection is vital when working together which then leads to friendships that will last a lifetime!

What roles, tasks, or programs do you help with at GiGi’s Playhouse?

I have done both the literacy program and an external intership with the Amina Grace speech program.

I love being able to build literacy sessions around what my clients love. For instance during one literacy program we worked on reading through a magic treehouse book that was centered around a topic of interest. Having a client centered session that highlights interests and hobbies creates a great environment for growth, connection, and drive.

Do you have a favorite or memorable moment from volunteering at GiGi’s?

During one of my virtual literacy sessions we made an ornament to celebrate our final session. It was so amazing that even though we were not physically in the same room, we still were able to have a great time talking, crafting, and enjoying a great literacy session!

How has volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse impacted you personally?

GiGi’s playhouse has impacted in so many different ways. It has taught me that sometimes it is best to just take in the moment, I feel sometimes I am a very “go go go” type of person and being here has reminded me to slow down and take in all the moments. I feel that I have grown so much as a person, a friend, and a clinician here and I will forever be grateful for GiGi’s playhouse

We are grateful for you, Maris!
Thank you for bringing your talents and positivity to our Playhouse!
