Volunteer Spotlight: Jill Topf

Tell us a little about yourself!

My name is Jill Hickey Topf and I began volunteering at GiGi’s Tinley Park in June, 2025. My passion for education and creative storytelling has always guided my career path. For over 20 years I worked in Religious Education and volunteered as a catechist with children/adults with special needs. Later, when I joined the corporate world, I volunteered with Junior Achievement. After retiring from Ronald McDonald House Charities, Inc. last fall, I joined GiGi’s as a Saturday Site Assistant and learned the literacy program needed volunteers. It was serendipity! I signed up for the summer session and am now fully dedicated to this cause!

What is your favorite part about volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse?

Volunteering as a tutor brings me immense joy! Witnessing my friends achieve or even exceed their goals is truly rewarding!

What roles, tasks or programs do you help with at GiGi’s?

As a literacy volunteer, my approach centers on understanding the aspirations of participants and parents to tailor resources effectively. I leverage GiGi’s materials as a foundation, enhancing them with extra activities, tools, or games to solidify the learning experience.

Do you have a favorite or memorable moment from volunteering at GiGi’s?

After discovering my friend’s admiration for Taylor Swift, I introduced a book about her that we would read together at the end of each lesson. Witnessing my friend’s excitement and increased engagement during those moments was truly delightful. It also served as an excellent aid in honing our comprehension skills.

How has volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse impacted you personally?

My decision to volunteer at GiGi’s Playhouse has been a gift. After dedicating over 60 hours per week to work for many years, the thought of retirement initially sparked concerns about potential loneliness and boredom. Volunteering not only keeps me actively engaged but also provides a vibrant social environment and fills me with boundless joy. 🙂

Thank you, Jill, for everything you do, and bringing
your passion and dedication to GiGi’s Playhouse Tinley Park!
