From Internet Search to GiGi U Graduate: A Journey Fueled by Determination

Vanessa first connected with GiGi’s Playhouse Sugar Land in January 2024, all because of a simple internet search. Curious to learn more and eager for growth, she applied and interviewed for our GiGi U program, a comprehensive course designed to build confidence, workplace readiness, and life skills. Vanessa was proudly accepted—and from the moment she walked through our doors, she fit right in.

Her commitment to learning and her kind spirit quickly made her a valued member of our Playhouse community. Over the next several months, she participated in programs, attended events, and tackled goals with focus and enthusiasm. By May 2024, she had completed GiGi U and advanced into the GiGi Professional program, which she has now been a part of for over a year.

Determined to Work: Turning a Dream into Reality

Vanessa arrived at GiGi’s with one clear goal: to earn a paid job. That goal, combined with her unwavering determination, set her on a path to success.

As part of our GiGi Professional program, Vanessa was matched with an 8-week internship at The Lavish Goat, a local business that specializes in handmade bath products. There, she learned warehouse procedures, practiced inventory skills, and helped package products such as bath bombs and shower steamers.

Her dedication, attention to detail, and consistent work ethic caught the eye of the business owner, Sean, who was so impressed that he decided to offer her a permanent position. Vanessa now works 8 hours a week, helping prepare products for customers with pride and precision. Her success reflects not only her own determination, but also the power of businesses willing to invest in inclusive employment.

While her professional achievements are impressive, Vanessa’s story doesn’t stop there. She is a supportive friend, a creative contributor, and a positive presence throughout the Playhouse. She never hesitates to lend a helping hand to her peers or encourage others during group activities.

Vanessa especially shines during art projects, where her creativity and imagination take center stage. In May 2025, she walked the runway as a radiant model in our Be-YOU-tiful Fashion Show, proudly representing herself and the broader Down syndrome community with confidence and grace.

In fact, Vanessa attends nearly every event we offer—from volunteer opportunities and community outings to fun social gatherings. Her joyful energy is contagious, and her presence is felt and appreciated by all who know her.
