Down Syndrome Awareness (Acceptance) Month!
As Down Syndrome Awareness (and Acceptance) Month comes to a close, we would like to
share some ways that you can continue to celebrate even after October is over!
Commit to Kindness – Join Generation G!
Throughout the month of October, The Down Syndrome Information Alliance suggests
celebrating Down Syndrome Awareness Month by performing 31 acts of kindness – one for each
day of the month. However, performing acts of kindness is something that we can practice any day of the year! We encourage you to perform an act of kindness every day of the year to
commemorate Down syndrome awareness. Take the pledge and join Generation G!
Educate Others
We are so lucky to have a community at GiGi’s that celebrates and accepts all of our peers with Down syndrome. It is important that we educate others so they can share our love, appreciation
and acceptance of individuals with Down syndrome. A great way to do this is through sharing
books that encourage inclusion. Here at GiGi’s Playhouse, we recommend:
Teeny, Tiny Pieces by Maria Dillon
You Are Enough by Margaret O’Hair and Sofia Sanchez
My Friend Isabelle by Eliza Woloson
What’s Inside You Is Inside Me Too: My Chromosomes Make Me Unique by Deslie Webb
Quinby and Jeannie Visootsak
47 Strings. Tessa’s Special Code by Becky Carey
We’ll Paint the Octopus Red by Stephanie Stuve-Bodeen
Social Media
This generation is obsessed with social media. Let’s use it for a good cause! You can use
hashtags like #DownSyndromeAwarenessMonth to share information and highlight how people
with Down syndrome have impacted you and/or our society.
Volunteer
There are plenty of outstanding organizations that support Down syndrome education and/or provide services for individuals with Down syndrome and their families. You can support them by volunteering some of your time there. Some organizations that you can look into include:
Down Syndrome Resource Foundation, National Down Syndrome Society and National Down
Syndrome Congress.
Let us know how you have been celebrating Down syndrome Awareness month and we
will be sure to add it to our blog!
