It’s been a seven-year labor of “love”, but Portland, Oregon is ready to be the 61st national location for GiGi’s Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Centers. The public is invited to the Grand Opening celebration beginning at 1:00 PM on Saturday September 28th. A ribbon cutting ceremony at 1:15 will start the festivities followed by playhouse tours and fun until 4:30 PM. GiGi’s Playhouse Founder, Nancy Gianni and her daughter, “The GiGi” will be on hand to christen the first GiGi’s Playhouse location in the Pacific Northwest, greet guests and sign books.
Portland’s GiGi’s Playhouse journey began in 2017 when a handful of parents of children with Down syndrome applied to begin the “start-up” process. Years of socializing community needs, securing financial support, hosting events and enduring a two-year pandemic no less, were finally rewarded in the fall of 2023 when a lease was signed at 8538 SW Apple Way, Portland. Of course that wasn’t the end of the waiting: the team waited six months to get building permits and another six months to complete the renovations of the 5350 square foot former fitness facility.
The Portland community has raised over $400,000 in support of the capital needs for this project. Foundations including The Edward and Romell Ackley Foundation, The Andersen Construction Foundation, The Home Depot Foundation, Motiv8 Foundation, The Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation and The JTMF Foundation have sponsored events, playhouse rooms, playhouse programs and/or our capital campaign.
