Program Spotlight: Destination Discovery, an exciting program targeted for individuals ages 4 to 12 years; with or without a Down syndrome diagnosis!

An Olympic Games-themed Destination Discovery in Cleveland, OH

Destination Discovery is an exciting and fun group program that supports the development of motor skills, social skills and language through purposeful play and peer to peer interaction in a casual and fun setting. Targeted at children 4-12 years (but adaptable to all ages) this program also brings families together to share experiences and build relationships. Goals of the program include:

  • Increase social skills, with focus on group participation and increasing leisure activity options.
  • Increase language development, with focus on vocabulary development, receptive language skills such as following directions and answering basic questions and promoting successful interaction with peers.
  • Increase gross motor skills at each individual’s level through games and activities aimed at active play.
  • Increase fine motor skills, with focus on self-help skills and independent work.

This year, GiGi’s Playhouses across the U.S. have had some incredible Destination Discovery sessions. Lancaster, PA held a “Cool Party,” where participants enjoyed an outdoor water party on a hot summer day, complete with a slip-n-slide! Atlanta, GA held a Pet Therapy Day, where participants could pet and play with certified therapy dogs from Caring Paws. To celebrate the Olympic Games, the Cleveland playhouse held several themed crafting and fitness activities. In Annapolis, MD, participants took to the sea with Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (C.R.A.B.), including a field trip to the docks! The possibilities are limitless, and our program leaders are hard at work selecting exciting session themes for Portland.
