It all started with a walk . . . . . . .

In 2021, a few women in my neighborhood posted on Facebook looking for early-morning walking partners. The next day, two of us showed up—and that’s when I met Kathryn. From the very beginning, her energy, quick wit, and beautiful British accent made her unforgettable. She had been raised in South Africa, and I was captivated by her stories. That very first walk was full of laughter (and even a lesson on why the term “fanny pack” should never be used there!).

During our walks, I shared about GiGi’s Playhouse and our work in the Down syndrome community. Kathryn was curious and eager to learn more, asking thoughtful questions with genuine excitement. It wasn’t long before she became part of our GiGi’s family, stepping into her role as a dedicated literacy tutor. For three years, she faithfully worked with her little buddy, Ave—sometimes driving over an hour each way just to be there for her.

Recently, Kathryn lost a short but brave battle with cancer. Her passing leaves an unfillable hole in the lives of her family, her colleagues, her many friends, and all of us at GiGi’s Playhouse Phoenix. She will always be remembered for her kindness, her laughter, and the way she gave her time and her heart so freely.

You never know how one simple question or conversation might change your life—and the lives of so many others. That was Kathryn’s gift.

We will miss you dearly, sweet Kathryn.
