An Unforgettable Family’s Journey: Welcoming 2 Month Old Baby Santiago to GiGi’s Playhouse
How the Vargas Family Found Love, Support, and a New Home at GiGi’s Playhouse
The Vargas family is a new and cherished addition to our Playhouse community. One afternoon, I received a call from Juan, a new dad eager to learn more about GiGi’s Playhouse OC. He shared the exciting news of their newborn, Santiago, and expressed interest in visiting the Playhouse. While I explained that we currently don’t have programs for babies due to low participation, I encouraged him to stop by, adding that we could explore options like starting the LMNOP program around their schedule.
Coincidentally, our 2nd anniversary party was happening that very evening, so I invited him to attend. Despite living about an hour away—with Friday night traffic—Juan said he would try to make it. The thought of a baby at the Playhouse, especially a 40-day-old, filled me with excitement. I prepared a special welcome bag for Santiago, brimming with thoughtful items: a blanket, books, bottles, a onesie, toys, and a personalized card.
As the party got underway, I received word that Juan, his wife Angie, and baby Santiago had arrived. The warmth in the room was instant. Everyone welcomed them with open arms, and Santiago became the center of attention—passed around (with mom and dad’s blessing) like a cherished little bundle of joy.
While Santiago was doted on by families, I gave Juan and Angie a tour of the Playhouse. As I explained its purpose and programs, I noticed tears streaming down Angie’s face. I paused, looked into her eyes, and reassured her, “You’re going to be okay. More than okay. This place, and the families here, are proof that this journey as Santiago’s mom is just beginning—and it’s going to be beautiful.”
Angie and Juan had not received a prenatal diagnosis, so this was all new territory for them. Standing in the heart of GiGi’s kitchen, the emotions were palpable—an overwhelming mix of love, uncertainty, and realization. Yet, as the night unfolded, something magical happened.
One by one, parents in the room approached the Vargases, sharing their stories, offering support, and providing resources. They spoke of their own journeys, bringing comfort and reassurance. One mom’s words stood out: “Out of my four kids, the one with Down syndrome is my easiest.” That simple sentiment sparked smiles and laughter, easing some of the weight Juan and Angie felt.
Though none of us can predict the future, knowing they have a community like GiGi’s Playhouse to guide and support them brought visible relief. The love in the room transformed the evening—it became more than an anniversary celebration; it became a heartfelt welcome for Santiago.
This moment perfectly embodies what GiGi’s Playhouse is all about: love, connection, and unwavering support. We are so fortunate to have the Vargas family as part of the GiGi’s family and can’t wait to see them thrive in this incredible community.
