Participant Spotlight: Veronica and Kamila

Finding your community can be a journey. You want to find the people who have shared your experiences or who can offer guidance and support. Veronica was on that journey with Kamila when I met her.

People say things happen for a reason, and I believe they do. I was working at Friends of Down Syndrome, a nonprofit for adults with Down syndrome, when Veronica called. She mentioned she had a daughter with Down syndrome and was looking for programs her daughter could participate in. Unfortunately, Kamila was too young for the programs offered.

Friends of Down syndrome was hosting a fashion show for all ages that October, so I invited her and Kamila to join us. We had a fantastic time. It was the last year we had that fashion show, and that was the last time we saw each other until now.

Two years passed, and I joined the GiGi’s Playhouse Houston family. In my first month here, we had an LMNOP class on a Saturday. Veronica walked into the playhouse with Kamila, and we both looked at each other and realized we knew each other.

Seeing all of Kamila’s growth since starting at the playhouse is exciting.

Veronica and Kamila joined our playhouse community in October 2023. They are active in LMNOP, Dance Kids, and Destination Discovery. They both love all the programs they attend. Their favorites, which have had the most impact, are our  Early Learners Music and the Dance Kids programs. Kamila loves music and dancing and enjoys interacting with other kids, especially her interactions with Miss Dana, who leads these programs.

I asked Veronica what GiGi’s Playhouse means to her and what its impact is on her and Kamila. Veronica says being a part of the GiGi’s Playhouse community has been a blessing, and they needed to join GiGi’s. They have found a fantastic support group, which has been so special. Veronica says not to underestimate what our exceptional Down syndrome individuals can do, and we agree! Thank you to Veronica and Kamila for sharing your story

We are honored to be a part of your journey!
