Volunteer Spotlight: Becca Mansfield
Allow us to introduce the wonderful Becca Mansfield!
Becca began volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse Detroit in the fall of 2023. She started by supporting two programs for youth and adults, and within weeks asked, “How do I become a program leader?” Becca now leads GiGi’s Kitchen Teen and continues to assist GiGi’s Kitchen Adult and Fantastic Friends.
While we have immense gratitude for every volunteer who comes our way, something we really value about Becca is when it comes to our mission and purpose – she GETS it. Becca holds a strengths-based, inclusion-for-all mindset in every facet of her life, and while she was new to the DS community when she started, we didn’t have to teach her a thing about the humanity, potential, and worthiness of the folks we serve.
Becca doesn’t need much more of an intro, as her interview speaks for itself… Do yourself a favor and keep reading till the end!
Hi Becca, tell us a bit about your daytime occupation.
I’m the Vice President at Spark Foundry, an advertising agency with a local office in Birmingham. I specialize in programmatic media buying, a practice that uses data to automate and optimize digital advertising.
What’s a fun fact about you that might surprise us?
I have been recruited for multiple reality TV shows and came very close to appearing on ‘Married at First Sight’.
How did you find out about GiGi’s Playhouse?
I was in passive pursuit of something fulfilling to do outside of work when I came across a social media post about GiGi’s Playhouse. Intrigued, I decided to reach out about volunteer opportunities, and the rest is history!
What is it about the mission of GiGi’s Playhouse that appeals to you, personally?
Being part of an organization that celebrates the strengths of every individual is something I am truly passionate about. I’m also inspired by GiGi’s Playhouse’s commitment to accessibility, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, can benefit from resources and support.
What do you love about being at GiGi’s? What keeps you coming back?
I did my first program observation at Friends, Fun & Fitness and the participants welcomed me like they had known me forever. The warmth and genuine connections I experienced that day are what I love most about being at GiGi’s. The joy, support, and encouragement that fill the atmosphere keep me coming back, eager to contribute and be a part of this amazing community!
How has volunteering here impacted your life?
My experiences at GiGi’s Playhouse have given me a deeper appreciation for the strength and resilience of individuals with Down syndrome and their families. I have developed meaningful friendships with participants, their families and other volunteers, and I’ve gained valuable skills in communication and empathy. Being part of such a positive and supportive environment has been incredibly rewarding and has inspired me to continue advocating for accessibility and inclusion in all areas of my life.
What are some of your favorite memories from volunteering?
I took a sabbatical from work this past summer and spent a lot of my downtime at the Playhouse doing various things. One such activity was accompanying one of our adult participants to do the weekly grocery shopping for our Kitchen program as part of his Math Tutoring curriculum (there is a lot of mental math that goes into grocery shopping and paying!). We always had so much fun grocery shopping together and we developed a special connection. It was amazing how an everyday activity like grocery shopping became such a meaningful opportunity, both for learning and creating a lasting bond.
Some of my other favorite memories have been spending time with participants at various fundraisers and parties throughout the year. Seeing Luke Tyrell perform a Van Halen song with Liquor Chicken and Aric Sims’ fantastic rendition of My Girl were highlights that made these events so fun!
What would you say is the biggest misconception about individuals with Down syndrome?
One of the biggest misconceptions about individuals with Down syndrome is that they are not capable of leading fulfilling and productive lives. In reality, our friends with extra chromosomes can contribute to society in many wonderful ways! They can work, go to school, maintain friendships and relationships, and with the right support, can often live independently. It’s important to recognize and celebrate the abilities and potential of individuals with Down syndrome rather than focusing on limitations.
Why do you believe people with Down syndrome are an important part of our community?
Many individuals with Down syndrome possess an extraordinary capacity for empathy and connection. Their pride in who they are can teach us all to celebrate our differences.
What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse?
Volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse is an incredibly rewarding experience. You truly get so much more than you give. The joy and fulfillment you feel from making a difference in the lives of individuals with Down syndrome is unmatched. Since I started volunteering, I’ve seen firsthand how impactful it can be, and I’ve even recruited my mom and one of my best friends to join me! The sense of community and the connections you build are amazing. If you’re considering volunteering, I highly encourage you to take the leap – it’s an opportunity to grow, learn, and be part of something truly special.
Do you have a favorite quote?
“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
