Volunteer Spotlight: Fran Roth

GiGiFIT Infant Leaders Fran (left), Meghan (right)

This month it is our absolute pleasure to recognize an incredible woman who has donated her time and talent to the youngest members of our community, since 2019!

There couldn’t be a more qualified person to co-lead our GiGiFIT Infant program. Fran is a retired pediatric physical therapist, after 44 years in the field! She started the peds outpatient program at a downriver hospital, worked at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, and then spent most of her years in the school system, primarily with early intervention.

As the author of this blog I can personally attest to Fran’s gifts, because my son was 18 months-old when we started attending the Playhouse. Fran was one of the first people we met, and not only was she welcoming, positive, and skillful, but it was clear she genuinely cared about each child in the group. She knew where each child was developmentally and how they could be uniquely challenged to reach their Best Of All. She came prepared every week with creative ideas, equipment, and tips for parents to engage their child at a personal level. Week after week, we waddled like penguins, rowed our boats, and danced with children under parachutes, all while singing, laughing, and being uplifted by Fran’s playful, wise, soft-hearted spirit.

Since the opening of GiGi’s Playhouse Detroit, Fran has been quick to help out with any program that fits her schedule, including GiGiFIT, Crawlers & Walkers, LMNOP, Open Play, and Math Tutoring – both in person and virtually.

Please take a moment to get to know Fran more below…

What are some of your favorite hobbies and interests outside of GiGi’s?

I love spending time with my family the most, followed by being outdoors. I like camping, kayaking, hiking and rails to trails bike riding.

What’s a fun fact about you that might surprise us?

I am a generally happy person who likes to make people laugh. I also pull pranks. My long time work buddies still call me “Frankster”.

How did you find out about GiGi’s Playhouse?

I heard about GiGi’s Playhouse as it was forming from area families, and then I saw it open within a mile of my home!

What is it about the mission of GiGi’s Playhouse that appeals to you, personally?

The mission to change the way society views Down syndrome in order to gain acceptance for everyone appeals the most to me.

What do you love about being at GiGi’s? What keeps you coming back?

I enjoy interacting with the friendly staff and volunteers that join together to offer free programs that enrich an individual with Down syndrome’s life.

How has volunteering here impacted your life?

I get a heartfelt feeling of satisfaction after volunteering that makes me happier and most likely, healthier too.

What are some of your favorite memories from volunteering?

Every baby and toddler has brought a smile to my face, especially when I notice their parent watching their baby’s first time rolling over, crawling, standing alone, or walking.

What would you say is the biggest misconception about individuals with Down syndrome?

Sadly, some feel that individuals with Down syndrome benefit from self-contained classrooms, while a level of inclusion is a viable option.

Why do you believe people with Down syndrome are an important part of our community?

To me, a community is a group of members who care about one another and work together towards a common goal. So a person with Down syndrome, or anyone with any level of ability, is of equal importance as a part of a community sharing that same purpose.

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse?

If you want to make a difference in another person’s life, while feeling good about it yourself, then come to GiGi’s Playhouse to volunteer.

Do you have a favorite quote?

“As different as we are, we are all the same.” – David Grover, musician

Fran is such a treasure and we are deeply grateful for her support!

You are so right about Fran! I’ve been lucky to have known her as a friend since we were little girls.
