Group Shot with The Nielsen Company Volunteers

Company Sponsored Events at the Playhouse

Last Thursday, The Nielsen Company came and sponsored an open play for the GiGi’s Chicago Playhouse. The volunteers did face painting and temporary tattoos for our teens. They played indoor beach volleyball because of the rain and lots of other fun games. Pizza was eaten, memories made, and all around everyone had a great time. I know the initial thought is GiGi’s Playhouse is a great place for people with Down syndrome to learn and experience things they don’t get elsewhere, but it’s also an opportunity for members of the community to grow and learn as well. We had conversations with these volunteers about our mission for acceptance and how far we’ve come in the short 10 years we’ve been open. They were shocked to learn that we have playhouses nation wide and how many are trying to open.

This Thursday we have Cars.com sending volunteers to host an ice cream social and help clean and organize the playhouse. We look forward to having the same types of conversations with these new volunteers. Spreading the message of #GenerationG (general kindness and acceptance for everyone) never gets old. Perfomics is another company making plans to sponsor an event in July for our playhouse. These gatherings are so much more than parties. The volunteers take experiences and memories with them that can help us change the way society views people with Down syndrome. If they each go back and tell one new person about the amazing time they had and how great the individuals with Down syndrome are then is a seed planted and good news will spread.
