Volunteer Spotlight: Michelle- Building Confidence One Connection at a Time
A Heart for Every Participant
At GiGi’s Playhouse Charleston, our volunteers are the heart of everything we do. They give their time, talents, and compassion to create a place where individuals with Down syndrome are encouraged, celebrated, and empowered to reach their highest potential. This month, we are thrilled to shine our Volunteer Spotlight on Michelle, a volunteer whose gentle spirit, encouraging heart, and genuine love for our participants have made an incredible impact on our Playhouse family.
Michelle has a special gift for making every participant feel seen, valued, and capable. From the moment she walks through our doors, she brings a calm and comforting presence that helps participants feel safe to learn, grow, and simply be themselves. Whether someone is joining a program for the first time or has been attending for years, Michelle has a way of making each individual feel important. Her warm smile, patient attitude, and kind words remind everyone that they belong exactly as they are.
One of Michelle’s greatest strengths is her passion for working one-on-one with participants during activities. She understands that every individual learns differently and takes the time to meet each participant where they are. Rather than rushing through an activity, Michelle focuses on building relationships, offering encouragement, and celebrating every success—whether it’s mastering a new skill, completing a project independently, or simply finding the confidence to give something new a try. Her individualized approach helps participants experience success while building confidence that extends far beyond the walls of the Playhouse.

Encouraging Growth Through Meaningful Connections
One of the things that makes Michelle such an extraordinary volunteer is the genuine connection she builds with every participant she works alongside. She doesn’t simply assist with activities—she invests in people. She listens, celebrates accomplishments, offers reassurance during challenging moments, and creates an environment where participants feel comfortable stepping outside of their comfort zones.
Trying something new can be intimidating for anyone, but Michelle has a remarkable ability to encourage participants to believe in themselves. Whether it’s participating in a group activity, practicing communication skills, or tackling a challenging task, Michelle offers just the right amount of support while allowing participants the opportunity to discover what they are capable of accomplishing. Her encouragement is always positive, patient, and filled with genuine excitement for every milestone, no matter how big or small.
Because Michelle builds such strong relationships, participants naturally trust her. That trust opens doors to growth, confidence, and independence. She celebrates progress instead of perfection and understands that every step forward is worth recognizing. Those moments of encouragement often become turning points that help participants realize they can accomplish more than they ever imagined.
Michelle also brings tremendous joy to every program she volunteers with. Her positive attitude is contagious, and her caring nature helps create the welcoming atmosphere that makes GiGi’s Playhouse Charleston feel like home for so many families. Volunteers like Michelle remind us that meaningful change often begins with something as simple as spending time with someone, offering a word of encouragement, or believing in another person’s potential.
“Michelle is an incredible advocate and source of comfort for our participants. She is often found working one-on-one and encouraging them in participating in activities. With Michelles guidance, we have seen many of our particpants push past their comfort zones and make meaningful connections.”

Thank You, Michelle!
GiGi’s Playhouse Charleston simply would not be the same without volunteers like Michelle. Every hour she gives, every conversation she shares, and every encouraging word she offers helps fulfill our mission of changing the way the world views Down syndrome while sending a powerful message of acceptance and belief. Her willingness to serve with compassion and consistency makes a lasting difference not only for our participants but for their families, fellow volunteers, and staff members as well.
Michelle exemplifies what it means to be part of the GiGi’s Playhouse family. She leads with kindness, serves with humility, and pours her heart into helping others succeed. Her ability to comfort participants, build meaningful one-on-one relationships, and encourage them to embrace new experiences reflects everything we strive to create within our Playhouse. She demonstrates that sometimes the greatest gift we can give is our time, our patience, and our belief in another person’s abilities.
Michelle, thank you for sharing your heart with our participants and for making GiGi’s Playhouse Charleston a place where everyone feels welcomed, encouraged, and loved. Your dedication inspires those around you, and your impact is felt in countless ways each and every day.
