We love our Volunteers here at GiGi’s Playhouse Sugar Land.
My name is Ameena Ahmed. I am a senior at University of Houston majoring in Human Development and Family Sciences and minoring in Biology. I am on the course to graduate by December 2023. Choosing GiGi’s Playhouse was honestly one the easiest choices I have made. I volunteered at GiGi’s after my friend informed me about her interning here. When I started volunteering here, I instantly became drawn into the light and joy that GiGi’s brings to families and individuals with Down syndrome. During my internship, I led programs including LMNOP and GiGi Teen Fit. I have also assisted in several other programs including GiGi U, GiGi Prep, GiGi Kitchen Adult, and Destination discovery. Additionally, I have participated as a literacy tutor to a sweet teen child who needed extra assistance with literacy development.
Working at a Down Syndrome Achievement Center has been a rewarding and fulfilling experience for me as I am able to make a positive impact in the lives of individuals with Down syndrome. Interning at GiGI’s allows me to gain a deep understanding of Down syndrome, obtain teaching techniques and strategies to support the learning and development of individuals with Down syndrome, acquire a more inclusive mindset, and last but not least, learn lots of patience!
One of my most favorite experiences at GiGi’s would have to be spending time with baby bundles of joy! There’s nothing quite as delightful as working alongside babies and children, besides when they throw tantrums (nobody likes that). In fact, I am currently working towards my goal to become a physician assistant in pediatrics and I hope to make use of my experience here at GiGi’s to better serve and treat my future patients.
