3 Exciting ASL Programs Bringing People Together
Language is more than just words—it’s how we connect, express ourselves, and understand one another. Just like Spanish or French, American Sign Language (ASL) is a full and unique language, completely separate from English. It’s not just a direct translation of spoken words into signs; it has its own grammar, sentence structure, and cultural depth.
For those who rely on ASL, communication isn’t just about hand movements. Facial expressions, body language, and context add meaning and emotion, just like how spoken languages use tone and inflection. ASL is the heartbeat of the Deaf community, but it’s also a game-changer for many individuals with disabilities.
At GiGi’s Playhouse Southern Tier, we believe in the power of language—whatever form it takes. That’s why we incorporate sign language into several of our programs, making communication more accessible, inclusive, and fun for all!
ASL in Our Programs
We’ve seen firsthand how learning even a few basic signs can empower children and help them communicate their needs before they can speak. One of our favorite programs, LMNOP (Language, Music, and Our Peeps), is designed for early learners and reviews core signs every week. Signs like please, more, all done, and thank you give our young participants a voice before they develop verbal language. We also introduce new signs that tie into the day’s lesson, making each session interactive and engaging.
Watching little ones light up when they realize they can express themselves is one of the most rewarding things ever. Whether it’s a child signing “more” for their favorite snack or “thank you” after receiving help, those small moments make a huge impact.
Another amazing program, Signing with the Stars, takes ASL learning to another level—through music! Led by two local occupational therapists, this program teaches sign language through song. Each week, participants sign along to songs from different genres and eras, blending music and movement in a way that makes learning ASL feel effortless. It’s an absolute joy to watch everyone signing and singing along together.

The energy is infectious, and the skills they take away are invaluable.
A Special ASL Class with Stephen Krome
This January, we were thrilled to host a special three-week ASL class led by one of our incredible volunteers, Stephen Krome. During the class, participants learned:
✅ The ASL alphabet
✅ How to sign their names
✅ Basic, everyday signs for communication
✅ And—our favorite part—how to sign “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”
It was such a meaningful experience for everyone involved. Learning ASL is more than just memorizing signs; it’s about building confidence and connection. Seeing participants go from hesitant to excited as they learned new signs was absolutely inspiring.

Stephen has been a part of the GiGi’s Playhouse family since last year, and from day one, he’s been an enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer. Before joining us, he was a peer tutor at SUNY Broome, helping students learn ASL. When he saw the impact GiGi’s Playhouse has on the community, he knew he wanted to bring his passion for sign language here.
His love for ASL is contagious, and his warmth makes learning so much fun. We’re incredibly grateful to have him on our team, and we’re looking forward to offering more ASL opportunities in the future!
Why ASL Matters
Incorporating ASL into our programs isn’t just about teaching signs—it’s about breaking down barriers and creating an environment where everyone feels heard, understood, and included.
For many children, especially those with Down syndrome or other communication challenges, verbal speech takes time to develop. ASL gives them a way to express themselves long before words come. Imagine how powerful it is for a child to be able to sign “help” instead of getting frustrated or to ask for “more” when they want another turn on the swing. These little victories make a huge difference in building confidence and reducing frustration.
And ASL isn’t just beneficial for those who need it—it’s a beautiful language for anyone to learn. Knowing even a few signs allows us to connect with individuals who use ASL as their primary mode of communication. Plus, it’s just fun! Who wouldn’t want to be able to sign along to their favorite songs or have secret conversations across a crowded room?
