Volunteer Spotlight: Mikayla!
With Volunteer Appreciation Month coming up, we want to highlight those who make our Playhouse come to life by leading programs, working in the Playhouse to make it better, and caring for our participants. This week we highlight our volunteer, Mikayla! Mikayla helps lead our GiGi’s Adult Cooking Class and is a local registered dietitian/ health coach in the Southern Tier area!

How did you hear about GiGi’s Playhouse/ get involved as a volunteer?
I heard it from one of my clients! Mario. I knew I should definitely get involved!
Had you ever worked with individuals with Down syndrome or special needs?
Yes! My step sister from a prior marriage in my family had special needs – we were very close for many years – this definitely helped me in prep for supporting GiGi’s!
How has volunteering with the Playhouse impacted your life?
I love volunteering at the playhouse! It brings a smile to my face knowing that reliable nutrition info is provided for the participants! I feel as though I am supporting many types of people in the world of nutrition which I am proud of.
What was your prior perspective on Down syndrome vs what it is now
Honestly, the reminder that people with down syndrome are limitless! There is nothing that they cannot do.
Share your favorite memory or story from volunteering in the Playhouse
I loved making the black bean burgers from our most recent kitchen class! Everyone was working together so well and having a great time. Also, everyone liked the black bean burger which is HUGE – because that means they can add this nutrient packed meal into their life.
What does a more accepting world look like to you?
Accepting everyone for what makes them THEM. We are taking strides but there is always work to be done. I am proud to be taking steps at GiGi’s playhouse.
