Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Tomaso: A Big Brother, A Volunteer, and a Lifelong Advocate
From New Orleans to Simi Valley, Tomaso’s Journey with GiGi’s Playhouse Comes Full Circle
Tomaso Dire is no stranger to the magic of GiGi’s Playhouse. As the older brother of a young woman with Down syndrome, Tomaso grew up immersed in the supportive and joyful community of the New Orleans Playhouse. With his mother serving on the leadership team there, GiGi’s Playhouse has always been a big part of his family’s story.
When Tomaso relocated to Southern California for his role at Disney, he was thrilled to discover that a brand-new GiGi’s Playhouse was taking root in Simi Valley. Without hesitation, he reached out to volunteer—and we are so grateful he did! As a new location, we are incredibly fortunate to benefit from the experience and insight of someone who has been deeply impacted by a long-standing Playhouse.
Tomaso now serves as the Program Assistant for our Leaps & Bounds program, which brings together toddlers with Down syndrome and their siblings for fun, developmentally appropriate activities. His kind and personable nature shines each Saturday, making everyone feel welcomed and supported.
What makes Tomaso’s presence especially meaningful is his perspective as a sibling. When parents learn that he has a sister with Down syndrome, they’re eager to connect. They ask questions, share their hopes and concerns, and find comfort in hearing his story. Many parents wonder how to balance their attention between all their children, especially when therapies and medical appointments for their child with Down syndrome take extra time. Tomaso provides reassurance and encouragement, reminding them that with love and communication, sibling bonds can grow stronger than ever.
We’re so grateful to have Tomaso as part of our volunteer family. His story is a powerful reminder of the lifelong impact GiGi’s Playhouse has—and how our community of support continues to grow, one volunteer at a time.
