Why I Am Walking: Board Member, Laurie explains Why GiGiFIT 5K Run for 21 is so impactful
When my daughter, Sophie, was born with Down syndrome, I knew I was going to need the support of a tribe who was walking in my same shoes. GiGi’s Playhouse has given our whole family a place to belong… all the time… a place where Sophie can develop meaningful relationships with her peers and for us family-to-family and family-to-community. Sophie is so excited every single time we attend anything related to GiGi’s because she knows she is going to be welcomed with open arms and big warm smiles and loved unconditionally, just as she is. Me, too. I feel it every single time. To have these other moms and dads in our life that “get it” is a gift that always gives. I feel incredibly blessed to be a part of this community. I want the world to know I am the proud mom of a beautiful daughter who has have Down syndrome. I also want the world around her to be fulling accepting of her and encourages her to openly follow her dreams and desires by being inclusive and outgoing in doing this. GiGi’s Playhouse exists to help her prepare for a life where she can be all she wants to be. Our vision for Sophie’s future is big and includes college, independence, a job she adores and even finding the love of her life. I walking for acceptance and also to raise money, but this is so important to me that I am also part of the start-up team working to make GiGi’s Playhouse Simi Valley a reality. Will you please join me on this important mission?
