Volunteer Spotlight: Jake & Linsey!

Jake first joined us through the Fantastic Friends program and has also participated in the Amina Grace Speech & Language 1:1 sessions. From the moment we met Jake, he shared his aspiration to get an independent job, possibly at a grocery store or an ice cream shop. This goal has been a guiding light in his journey with us, and we’ve had the privilege of watching him work towards it with determination and enthusiasm!

Linsey came to GiGi’s Playhouse with a heart full of compassion and a desire to work with our participants. While she needed a role that wouldn’t require her to be on her feet for long periods, she was eager to make a meaningful impact. After attending Volunteer Welcome Night and exploring different opportunities, the idea to pair Linsey with Jake emerged as a natural fit—one that has proven to be incredibly successful!

Jake’s journey towards independence has blossomed through his partnership with Linsey. Together, they utilize the “I do, we do, you do” method, a strategy that has allowed Jake to take ownership of tasks while receiving the support he needs. Linsey starts by modeling a task, then they complete it together, and finally, Jake tackles the task on his own. Linsey is there to provide verbal prompts and gentle reminders, ensuring that Jake remains confident and in control.

This dynamic duo is an essential part of keeping our Playhouse clean and organized. Every week, Jake and Linsey take on any task that comes their way, contributing to our community while Jake hones important vocational skills that will serve him well in his future job search.

Jake’s mom, Sonya, has witnessed firsthand the positive impact of his volunteering experience. She shares, “Jake was first introduced to GiGi’s in 2023. Initially, he was uncomfortable and not very enthusiastic. But after speaking with Kaitlyn, the Site Manager, who suggested he volunteer, everything changed. Volunteering has been an excellent idea for Jake—it’s boosted his self-esteem and confidence. Now, he’s excited to go every Wednesday and feels a sense of being needed by others. GiGi’s has become a part of his life, and we’re extremely thankful.”

For Linsey, volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse has been a fulfilling way to connect with her community. “I’ve been a stay-at-home mother of four for the last 20 years. As my kids have gotten older, I’ve wanted to be more involved in my community, and GiGi’s has been the perfect fit. I love working with Jake as he prepares for employment. He’s happy, detail-oriented, and a hard worker. He’s also a jokester, loves to sing, and is patiently teaching me how to throw darts. I look forward every week to my time at GiGi’s.”
