The Importance of Inclusion

When it comes to GiGi’s Playhouse, inclusion is a necessity. In a world where diversity plays a big role in schools, neighborhoods, and the workplace, oftentimes those with disabilities are excluded from being given the same opportunities as their peers. Many are unaware that diversity is unsuccessful if full inclusion is not key. Why, may you ask? Diversity does not exist without inclusion. When people feel included, they feel a sense of belonging which builds their drive. Ultimately, this produces positive results for everyone. Keep reading to find out the meaning of inclusion and how can you incorporate it into your and your child’s life!

What is inclusion?
Inclusion is a philosophy that urges schools, neighborhoods, and communities to welcome and value everyone regardless of differences. Central to the philosophy of inclusion are the beliefs that everyone belongs, diversity is valued, and we can all learn from each other.

Why is inclusion important?
Inclusion molds the values of the next generation of children. It allows people to see the person first and the disability second, which in turn helps them learn empathy and to value diversity.

How can you promote inclusion?
Those who have disabilities are at the forefront of the fight for inclusion. Disabilities have been subject to be pitied or given assumptions for ability. Talking to your children, family, coworkers, and friends about disabilities will not only open the conversation, but it will allow the term to be more approachable. Nobody learns or works the same way. Recognizing that distinction is given to everyone will change societal views over time and allow more inclusion in schools, neighborhoods, and workplaces.

Want to get involved?
There are plenty of ways to help in the fight for inclusion. Get a team together to promote inclusive playgrounds in your community, plan ways to get more businesses to hire individuals with disabilities or get involved with GiGi’s Playhouse. GiGi’s Playhouse is entirely volunteer-based, and we would love to have you on our team! To learn more about our volunteer opportunities please email charleston@gigisplayhouse.org.
