#GenerationG in the 843 – Celebrating World Down Syndrome Month 2024!

#GenerationG is a worldwide movement that goes beyond Down syndrome and sends a global message of ACCEPTANCE for all. The core values of the #GenerationG movement are to be ACCEPTING, be GENEROUS, and be KIND! Each month, we will feature a story about individuals in our local Charleston community who represent those values.

In a heartwarming celebration of talent and inclusivity, Young Miss Leighton Dove made headlines when she was crowned Young Miss Yemassee Shrimp Festival 2024. Leighton, who has Down syndrome, captured the hearts of judges and the audience alike with her radiant smile, confidence, and infectious joy.

Leighton’s journey to the crown began months earlier as she practiced her walk and showcased her passion for dance. Leighton has always loved the stage, and participating in the pageant was a dream come true for her. “Laylay’s determination and spirit shine so brightly. After the performance, when we were waiting for the results backstage with all the other beauty pageant contestants, some of the girls in the younger age range walked in with their crowns and trophies, and Leighton’s eyes lit up as she said, ‘I want to win the crown, Mom’; and she sure did! She won this on her own with her amazing personality and magnetic presence.” her mother said, beaming with pride. And shining bright like a diamond is just what she did as she floated across the stage to Rihanna’s “Diamonds.”

During the event, Leighton not only dazzled in her gorgeous gown but also delivered an inspiring message about embracing differences and celebrating individuality. Her performance was met with thunderous applause, proving that true beauty comes from within.

The victory is not just a personal achievement for Laylay; it’s a milestone for inclusivity in beauty pageants. This year’s competition drew attention to the importance of representation and the beauty of diversity. Her win sends a powerful message: everyone deserves to feel beautiful and celebrated.

As she enjoys her reign at the Young Miss Yemassee Shrimp Festival, Leighton serves as a role model for children everywhere, inspiring them to chase their dreams, embrace who they are, and shine brightly, just as she does. Congratulations, Leighton! Your light is truly unforgettable!
