#GenerationG in the 843 – Sister Love

#GenerationG is a worldwide movement that goes beyond Down syndrome and sends a global message of ACCEPTANCE for all. The core values of the #GenerationG movement are to be ACCEPTING, be GENEROUS, and be KIND! Each month, we will feature a story about individuals in our local Charleston community who represent those values.

Our February story will hit you right in the feels!  It shows the incredible love of a big sister. At only 5 years old, Mati has a heart of gold. She is all about living that #GenerationG life to help make the world a better place for her little sister, Carly, who has Down syndrome. Mati loves playing, watching TV, going for walks, and being silly with her sister. She’s the world’s best therapist and has helped Carly reach many milestones. She will always be Carly’s biggest cheerleader and best friend!

This past summer Mati came up with the idea of having a lemonade stand for GiGi’s Playhouse. She picked one of the hottest days in the summer to open for business, the 4th of July! She wanted to make sure that everyone in the neighborhood knew about her lemonade stand and why it was important. Mati made signs, called friends, and invited neighbors to stop by. She was able to tell people this was for GiGi’s Playhouse and her little sister, Carly. In only two hours, Mati raised over $120. She probably would have been out there all day if it wasn’t so hot! Mati is excited to have another lemonade stand for GiGi’s Playhouse again this summer. Mati and her family plan to make this an annual event and may even add a hot chocolate stand in the winter!

Thank you, Mati, for being ACCEPTING, GENEROUS, and KIND! You are a #GenerationG hero and changing the way the world views Down syndrome! We can’t wait to see you and Carly in the playhouse when we open! If you would like to recognize someone in our #GenerationG in the 843 monthly blog, please email submissions to Charleston@gigisplayhouse.org.
