Squats, Planks and Standing Tall!

At the National Conference this year, we were all very excited to attend the sessions that would roll out GiGi’s brand new signature program – GiGiFit. When the schedule was released earlier in the year, I quickly informed our wonderful volunteer Kelly, who has bought fitness to the playhouse every month during Teen Tastic and has eagerly awaited the introduction of GiGiFit.

Kelly decided to attend the conference with us to gain more information and to see the program in action, so that we could bring what we learned back to Westchester. On the Saturday of the conference we attended two sessions that focused on GiGiFit. During the first session we met with Dr Sarah Mann and was embraced by her enthusiasm and dedication to this program. She kept us moving –  even making us do squats many times throughout the session!

The second session gave us the opportunity to see a GiGiFit session in action. Dr Sarah Mann, Sabrina and the GiGiFit team from the National Office showed us what they had learned over their sessions. It was amazing, inspiring and emotional – the breakout room was full of people clapping, cheering and joining in. Back to those squats – oh yes, we had to do more.

After the session, Kelly turned to me and said “This is my natural habitat. I have found my people!” Kelly is awesome, and we cannot wait to bring this purposeful program to GiGi’s Playhouse Westchester in 2019.

I love the GiGi Fit program. Talk about purposeful programming! It is designed with the specific needs of people with Down syndrome in mind. It focuses on strength, endurance, joint stability, balance and so much more. Plus it is fun! I am thrilled to be a part of this program.
