{"id":141725,"date":"2023-11-08T20:06:53","date_gmt":"2023-11-09T02:06:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/wausau\/?p=141725"},"modified":"2023-11-08T20:06:53","modified_gmt":"2023-11-09T02:06:53","slug":"world-adoption-day-stories-to-fill-your-heart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/wausau\/2023\/11\/08\/world-adoption-day-stories-to-fill-your-heart\/","title":{"rendered":"World Adoption Day&#8230;Stories to Fill Your Heart!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jaren&#8217;s Adoption Story<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"625\" height=\"919\" src=\"https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/wausau\/files\/2023\/11\/Capture-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-141728\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/wausau\/files\/2023\/11\/Capture-2.jpg 625w, https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/wausau\/files\/2023\/11\/Capture-2-204x300.jpg 204w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we started our\u00a0adoption\u00a0journey we never expected it would\u00a0take 4 years to complete or that we would have to switch\u00a0country programs only to have a referral fall through.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t expect to adopt a baby and we certainly didn&#8217;t expect to adopt a child with a disability.\u00a0 But doors closed and doors opened.\u00a0 We said little &#8220;yeses&#8221; along the way and continued to gather life experiences that eventually led us to say &#8220;YES&#8221; when our agency presented &#8220;Baby J&#8221; to us, a 9 month old baby boy with Down syndrome.\u00a0 We are forever grateful that our\u00a0adoption\u00a0journey didn&#8217;t go according to our plan.\u00a0 Jaren has opened our eyes to places and spaces of true belonging and acceptance.\u00a0 This sweet little boy has shared his joy with us each day; we are so grateful for the privilege\u00a0we have to love him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rachel &amp; Jake R. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Theodore&#8217;s Adoption Story<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could say our\u00a0adoption\u00a0journey started when I was in college. \u00a0 That\u2019s when I knew I wanted to adopt a child with Down syndrome. \u00a0It was something I just knew I was meant to do and needed to do. \u00a0It took Jim (husband) a little longer to come around to the idea\u20264 bio kids and then about 9 more years \ud83d\ude02. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We ended up getting our home study done the end April of 2012. \u00a0We registered with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndsan.org\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ndsan.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Down Syndrome\u00a0Adoption\u00a0Network (NDSAN)<\/a>. \u00a0 They are a wonderful organization that helps connections birth families with people who are ready and wanting to adopt a child with Down syndrome. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We got our first match in the beginning of June 2012. \u00a0 The birth mom was due in August with a baby girl. Once the little one was born, her parents decided to parent \ud83d\ude00. \u00a0It was difficult at the time but looking back we know she wasn\u2019t meant to be ours. \u00a0We still have contact with the family and they are all doing amazing!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that we continued to get calls about possible situations that we submitted our home study and profile to. \u00a0However we were never chosen. \u00a0 Around the start of 2013 we were starting to feel as if maybe\u00a0adoption\u00a0wasn\u2019t meant to be for us as things really slowed down as far as being asked to submit our profile.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"775\" height=\"553\" src=\"https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/wausau\/files\/2023\/11\/Capture-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-141730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/wausau\/files\/2023\/11\/Capture-4.jpg 775w, https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/wausau\/files\/2023\/11\/Capture-4-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/wausau\/files\/2023\/11\/Capture-4-768x548.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 775px) 100vw, 775px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">February 24, 2013 changed all that! \u00a0 It was a Sunday night and Stephanie from the NDSAN called around 9pm. \u00a0There was a baby boy who has been born in New Orleans and his birth family were making an\u00a0adoption\u00a0plan for him. \u00a0 They said that they didn\u2019t have many details but he was on oxygen and unsure about any other medical issues. \u00a0We had to agree to submit within a half hour as the family was going to make their decision overnight. \u00a0 Of course we said \u201cYes\u201d!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monday around noon Stephanie called me at work and the first thing she said was \u201cwhen can you leave to get your son?\u201d \u00a0 I of course left work asap and got started making arrangements for my other kids and to travel. \u00a0We talked to the birth family that day and they wanted to give us all of the baby items they had for him so we decided to drive down with our van. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We left Tuesday morning and of course there was a huge snowstorm through the entire state of Illinois! &nbsp;It was the longest, slowest drive of our lives with us counting the amount of cars we saw in the ditch. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We arrived Wednesday in New Orleans. &nbsp;We met the birth family and then we\u2019re allowed to head to the hospital to meet our son, whom we decided to name Theodore aka Teddy. &nbsp; That was a moment I will never forget and one of the happiest days of our lives. &nbsp; It was love at first sight! &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"776\" height=\"521\" src=\"https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/wausau\/files\/2023\/11\/Capture-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-141731\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/wausau\/files\/2023\/11\/Capture-5.jpg 776w, https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/wausau\/files\/2023\/11\/Capture-5-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/wausau\/files\/2023\/11\/Capture-5-768x516.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 776px) 100vw, 776px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are so many things that happened in the next 12 days during his NICU stay. Like when our van ran out of gas in the hospital parking lot and we had to sleep on couches in the waiting room, when cockroaches came out of the food at the Ronald McDonald house or when we had authentic Indian food at the birth family\u2019s home and I almost threw up after eating a date covered in edible gold. \u00a0 Each are things we can look back on and laugh about now.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are so many things that happened in the next 12 days during his NICU stay. Like when our van ran out of gas in the hospital parking lot and we had to sleep on couches in the waiting room, when cockroaches came out of the food at the Ronald McDonald house or when we had authentic Indian food at the birth family\u2019s home and I almost threw up after eating a date covered in edible gold. &nbsp; Each are things we can look back on and laugh about now. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were very fortunate that Teddy was able to come off the oxygen after a couple days.
