A Lesson in Connection and Empowerment

Lisa had the opportunity to work with GiGi’s Playhouse over the past 16 weeks. Her role involved tutoring and connecting with participants in a virtual setting. At first, Lisa felt nervous and unsure of what to expect. She wasn’t sure how she could help or if she could make a real difference. However, she quickly realized that building relationships was the most important aspect of her role. The participants were welcoming and kind, and Lisa learned that connecting with them was key to offering support.

GiGi’s Playhouse has a mission to change the way the world views Down syndrome, and Lisa saw this in action every week. The organization creates an environment where people with Down syndrome can grow, learn, and be celebrated. It was inspiring for Lisa to witness how the program not only changed the lives of the participants but also positively impacted their families. Through this experience, Lisa began to see Down syndrome in a new light and developed a deeper appreciation for the abilities of those who have it.

As the semester went on, Lisa grew more confident in her role. What initially felt like an intimidating experience became something she looked forward to each week. The participants, who had once seemed like strangers, became her friends. Lisa saw them grow in their skills and confidence, and she found herself learning from them as well. Working at GiGi’s Playhouse turned out to be a powerful experience for Lisa. It showed her the importance of building connections and changed the way she views people with Down syndrome.

This experience also had a lasting impact on Lisa’s family. They now see the world in a more inclusive and understanding way, and Lisa is grateful for the lessons she’s learned throughout the journey.
