Set expectations HIGH!<\/span><\/h3>\n

Assume potential.<\/p>\n

I might have to work a lot harder but give me a chance. Start by ALWAYS seeing my ability first, not my disability.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Use different learning styles.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Engage all the senses and teach in a variety of ways; use lots of repetition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Say it, show it, read it, sing it, jump it, dance it, taste it, whisper it, tap it, sign it!<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Down<\/p>\n

Show more, talk less!<\/span><\/h3>\n

The pathway from the eyes to the brain is much stronger than the pathway from the ears to the brain.<\/span><\/p>\n

Use a visual guide, a schedule, a choice board, a to-do list, etc. Be clear and concise!<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Break things down into steps.<\/span><\/h3>\n

It\u2019s best to show first and then build confidence & independence.<\/span><\/p>\n

I DO<\/strong>:<\/span> Model the task. <\/span><\/p>\n

WE DO<\/strong>:<\/span> Guide the learner with a physical, verbal, or written prompt. <\/span><\/p>\n

YOU DO<\/strong>:<\/span> The learner independently completes the task.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Make it fun!<\/span><\/h3>\n

Adapt your teaching to incorporate interests. <\/span>Using a multi-sensory approach, include movement, games, music, favorite characters from movies or shows, sports, rhymes, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Literacy,Know when to help.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Asking for help is an advocacy skill that doesn\u2019t come along naturally to everyone. <\/span>Knowing when and how to help often starts by empowering an individual to ask for the help they need, when they need it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Down<\/p>\n

Give time for a response.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Individuals with <\/span>Down syndrome have to work harder to retrieve information that is stored.<\/span><\/p>\n

After asking a question, allow <\/span>time for information to be processed <\/span>and a response <\/span>to be generated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Promote independence.<\/span><\/h3>\n

The sky is the limit on what individuals with Down syndrome are truly capable of. <\/span>With the right learning environment, motivation, and understanding, they will achieve what they set out to do!<\/span><\/p>\n
