At GiGi’s Playhouse Simi Valley, we spend our days surrounded by learners, leaders, artists, athletes, and friends. They also happen to have Down syndrome. And if there’s one thing we wish the whole world could see, it’s this: individuals with Down syndrome are more alike than different. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Down syndrome occurs when a person is born with a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21. It’s the most common chromosomal condition, and it occurs in people of every race, background, and community. But statistics only tell a small part of the story. The bigger truth is found in the everyday moments at GiGi’s Playhouse \u2014 a participant sounding out a new word during literacy tutoring, a young adult setting career goals, a family finding hope and community after a new diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Language matters, too. People with Down syndrome don’t “suffer from” it \u2014 they have it, the same way a person has brown eyes. That’s why person-first language is so important. We say “an individual with Down syndrome,” because the person always comes first. Small shifts in the way we speak create big shifts in the way the world sees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the most persistent myth about Down syndrome is the idea of limits. At GiGi’s Playhouse Simi Valley, we see those so-called limits shattered every single day. Our participants learn to read, hold jobs, build friendships, speak in front of crowds, and pursue their own version of Best of All \u2014 the idea of being a little better today than yesterday. Progress looks different for everyone, and every step forward deserves to be celebrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acceptance isn’t a one-time gesture; it’s a daily choice. That’s the heart of our #GenerationG campaign \u2014 a conscious decision to be better every day.
