Silly Socks, Sweet Treats, and Celebrating Inclusion: World Down Syndrome Day with GiGi’s Playhouse Sacramento!

By Nicole Deters

Every year on March 21st, our GiGi’s Playhouse Sacramento family comes together to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD)—a day that means so much to us. It’s a time to recognize the incredible individuals with Down syndrome who bring joy, love, and light into our lives, while also spreading awareness and advocating for a world where everyone belongs.

Just Like Many Years Before, We Gathered at Leatherby’s

For another amazing year, we celebrated at Leatherby’s Family Creamery, one of our favorite spots. Just like many years before, our Playhouse families, friends, and supporters came together to share laughs, enjoy delicious ice cream, and celebrate acceptance and inclusion. It’s always a special moment to look around and see our community growing stronger, with new faces joining us and longtime friends returning to celebrate together.

Blue, Yellow, and Silly Socks Everywhere!

One of the best parts of the day was seeing everyone rocking their silly socks and proudly wearing blue and yellow—the colors that represent Down syndrome awareness. Whether it was bright, mismatched socks or head-to-toe blue and yellow outfits, our community showed up in style, spreading love and positivity everywhere they went!

Why This Day Matters

World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated on March 21st (3/21) because individuals with Down syndrome have three copies of the 21st chromosome—a small difference that makes a big impact on their lives and the lives of those who love them. But this day is about so much more than genetics. It’s about celebrating abilities, friendships, and the belief that every person deserves to be valued, respected, and included.

Thank You for Being Part of This Movement

To everyone who joined us at Leatherby’s, wore their blue and yellow, or simply took a moment to share love and kindness—thank you. Your support means the world to our Playhouse families, and together, we’re making a difference.

At GiGi’s Playhouse Sacramento, acceptance isn’t just a one-day thing—it’s an everyday thing. Let’s keep celebrating, advocating, and believing in a world where different is beautiful.
