From the moment families began arriving at 10:00 AM to our final goodbyes at 1:00 PM, the space was filled with laughter, joy, and meaningful connection. With a total of 255 attendees, this year’s celebration was not only a huge success, but a powerful reminder of the strength and beauty of our community.

World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated each year on 3/21 to represent the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, which is what causes Down syndrome. But beyond the date itself, WDSD is about so much more—it is a global movement to celebrate individuals with Down syndrome, raise awareness, promote inclusion, and advocate for the rights, acceptance, and opportunities that every individual deserves. It’s a day to recognize abilities, uplift voices, and come together in support of a more inclusive world.

Our event embodied all of that and more.

The morning was filled with activities designed to bring people together in fun, creative, and meaningful ways. One of the most special parts of the day was our sock swap, a tradition tied closely to WDSD. Because chromosomes are shaped like socks, wearing bright, bold, mismatched socks has become a symbol of celebration and awareness. Families brought fun pairs from home or picked some up at the door, then mixed and matched to create their own unique combinations. It was amazing to see how something so simple sparked conversations, laughter, and a shared sense of purpose throughout the room.

There was no shortage of excitement as families moved throughout the Playhouse enjoying everything the event had to offer. Fairy hair and face painting added a touch of creativity and fun, allowing kids (and adults!) to express themselves in colorful ways. Music with Susan brought energy and rhythm to the space, encouraging dancing, singing, and joyful participation from everyone involved.

One of the biggest highlights of the day was a special visit from Wylde Scott and Dizz, whose entertainment brought smiles, laughter, and unforgettable moments to so many families. Watching participants engage, laugh, and light up during his performance was a true reflection of what this day is all about—joy, connection, and celebrating each individual for exactly who they are.

Of course, no celebration is complete without food and treats, and we were so lucky to have some incredible contributions. Ice cream from Dairy Queen was a huge hit and added an extra layer of excitement to the day. We are so grateful to Dairy Queen for lending us their ice cream cart and helping make that experience possible. In addition, Superica Fenton generously donated food, ensuring our families were well taken care of throughout the event.

We also want to extend our deepest thanks to RaleighPopBalloons for donating beautiful balloon décor that truly brought the space to life. Julie and Mike Palmer’s donation of socks made our sock swap possible and meaningful, and we are so appreciative of their support. A special thank you to Little Wild Light for capturing the day so beautifully—these photos will allow us to hold onto these memories for years to come.

Most importantly, we want to thank our families and volunteers. Your support, energy, and presence are what make events like this so impactful. Seeing so many familiar faces, along with so many new families, was incredibly special. We were especially excited to connect with those who were visiting the Playhouse for the first time, and we truly hope this was just the beginning. We look forward to continuing to build those relationships and welcoming new families into our regular programming in the months ahead.

At its core, World Down Syndrome Day is about belonging. It’s about creating spaces where individuals with Down syndrome are celebrated, included, and empowered—and where families feel supported and connected. This event was a beautiful reflection of that mission. Every smile, every conversation, and every shared moment reminded us why this work is so important.

We had so much fun celebrating what our community means to us, and our hearts are so full looking back on such a special day. We are already counting down the days until we can do it all again next year!

On March 21st, we had the incredible honor of celebrating World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) together at the Playhouse—and it truly exceeded anything we could have imagined.
