Dear Rhett: Sweet Sentiments from a Courageous Momma to her Wonderful Son
In honor of World Down Syndrome Day: Loving posts through the years to Rhett from his mother, Kristin

Each year on World Down Syndrome Day, GiGi’s Playhouse Orange County board member Kristin Daniels shares a heartfelt post in honor of her son, Rhett. As a dedicated advocate, Kristin works tirelessly to promote awareness and acceptance, helping to create a brighter, safer world for her son and others in the Down syndrome community.
2019 To my son Rhett, Happy 1st World Down Syndrome Day! Before you were born I didn’t even know this day existed, but now I know that we are part of the lucky few who get to celebrate this day. I will spend the rest of my life fighting for you and shouting your worth. You can do all things through Christ who gives you strength! There will be challenges ahead but we will face them together. You are so, so loved! Thank you for being our Holland tour guide 💛💙Love, your momma

2020 It’s a joy and an honor to celebrate this sweet boy on World Down Syndrome Day! Our lives are infinitely better because of YOU! 💛💙 #rhettaustindaniels

2021 Today we celebrated Rhett’s 3rd World Down Syndrome Day! Rhett’s Mimi has been referring to him as a “Joy Bomb” since he was a baby, and we shortly after realized he is also a “Joy Balm.” When I was pregnant and heard the words “Down syndrome,” my heart broke into a million pieces and I was devastated. Little did I know that Down syndrome & our little Joy Balm would be the very thing/person that would heal my heart. It’s one of the beautiful mysteries of my life — how one thing could take me down to the deepest valley but the very same thing would take me back up the mountain and show me the most incredible view.
I wish everyone could experience the view with me and Nate. It’s truly miraculous and indescribable! Thank you, God, for giving Rhett (and us) a little something extra ✨ #worlddownsyndromeday #theluckyfew

2022 Happy World Down Syndrome Day to all those with an extra chromosome, especially my sweet Rhett! It’s an honor to be the mom of one of these extraordinary humans!✨
Yesterday we were at Home Depot with both kids, Rhett in the seat of the shopping cart and Dakota in the basket. The woman that checked us out was very kind, chatting with us about how fun Dakota’s age is. Then she saw Rhett’s face when the cart moved forward and she looked at me and said, “I’m sorry” then looked back to Rhett and said, “Hi sweetie!”
It didn’t really occur to me what she was sorry about until we got to the car. It was then I realized she thought Down syndrome was something to be sorry about or pitied. She thought she was being compassionate, but there is absolutely nothing to be sorry about!! He is a precious child first and foremost…a precious life that we prayed for, made in the image of God Himself.
A year ago this comment would have made me sad all day but I realize I, too, have grown alongside Rhett. I only feel sorry for that woman – how sad that she doesn’t see the value of a human life and is missing out on all the magic and joy! Before we backed out of the parking spot I turned around and looked at Rhett in his car seat and said, “Rhett, I’m not sorry! You’re perfect!” He had a big smile on his face.
I just can’t help but think of someone saying that when he’s older and able to understand what they mean, that they think his life is less worthy. There are still people who don’t see the value or beauty of ALL lives, which is why I will forever and always shout his worth and advocate for him…a true, extra-special, one-of-a-kind, MIRACLE! 💙💛 #wdsd2022

2023 Happy World Down Syndrome Day! A study showed that 99% of people with Down syndrome are happy with their lives, 97% like who they are, 96% like how they look, and 86% say they can make friends easily. I can say these are 100% true of Rhett! He is pure magic ✨ and I’m so thankful for my front-row seat to his wonderful life! 🤍 #theluckyfew
