Ruth is a long-time member of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">GiGi\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0NYC family and we feel so fortunate to have her as a part of our team. To our Summer Clubhouse\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">families, you may remember Ruth\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">teaching some fun cooking classes! Last year, Ruth (virtually) taught us how to make delicious hummus and fruit smoothies\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\ud83d\ude0a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ruth wears many hats within the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">GiGi\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0NYC community and we are excited to share the below Q&amp;A with Ruth! Frank and I worked together, and as a result I got to know Joe. After Joe and Peter&#8217;s mother died, and Peter moved to NYC, he visited us in New Hampshire every 4th of July.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">What does\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">GiGi\u2019s<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0NYC mean to you?\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I had a seriously disabled brother, and my parents were very involved with United Cerebral Palsy, the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">organization t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hat supported him.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">GiGi&#8217;s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">NYC\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">seemed like a great way to support the disabled<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0community<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and was personal to me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">What do you do on the Board of Directors<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">?<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Over the eight years I have been involved with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">GiGi&#8217;s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">NYC,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I have been a volunteer, Board member, Governance Chair, member of the Gala committee<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">am\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">currently the Secretary<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of the Board of Directors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">What is your favorite thing about the\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">GiGi\u2019s<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0NYC community<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">?<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I know it sounds corny, but community. When you come to the Playhouse you see everyone greeting each other warmly, lots of smiles. It doesn&#8217;t matter if it is the individual with Down syndrome, sibling, friend, volunteer, staff, parent or grandparent, it is a warm, loving, kind, generous and supportive community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">What does Down syndrome awareness and acceptance look like to you?<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">When I was a child<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> I had an uncle who had Down syndrome. I never met him, because he did not live with my grandparents. Today I see individuals with Down syndrome everywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">What from our community are you most proud of?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">My favorite thing in the community is the summer programming. I have been a volunteer in those programs, cooking classes both live at the Playhouse and this summer on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">GoToMeeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">How do you enjoy spending your free time<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">?<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I retired in January 2016 and after spending a year trying to find volunteer opportunities, for the past three years I had been a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">math teacher\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">aide<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0in a Cambridge Public School and a volunteer at Mt Auburn Hospital (unfortunately not during COVID). I will go back to both activities when it is allowed and safe. However, I have been able to continue to volunteer at the Cambridge Women&#8217;s Center which is continuing to operate its drop<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">-i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n programming for women outside during COVID.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">What do you look forward to doing at the Playhouse once we can safely gather there again?<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0 Unfortunately, we live in Cambridge, but I will try to visit the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Playhouse\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">whenever we do come to NYC, and we will definitely be at the 2021 Gala!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">We are so inspired by Ruth\u2019s beautiful words and commitment to the Down syndrome community, and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0people of all abilities everywhere!
