can effectively treat heart defects, hearing and most vision issues common to individuals with Down syndrome, until recently scientists and doctors believed that there was nothing to be done medically for the cognitive issues associated with Down syndrome. In recent years, that thinking has changed dramatically and real progress has been made towards developing safe and effective treatments all led by the Down Syndrome Research and Treatment Foundation.

By funding work at Stanford University and Johns Hopkins University, DSRTF helped to identify five new potential drug targets for the cognitive issues associated with Down syndrome. In addition to Stanford and Johns Hopkins, DSRTF is currently funding research efforts at the University of San Diego, University of Arizona, University of Texas, Austin and the Veterans Administration Palo Alto Health Center. As a result of this work, three “candidate drugs” have been identified. This is stunning progress!

Through its novel research strategy and program, DSRTF continues to support key research initiatives, including proactive engagement of pharmaceutical companies, to advance the development of drugs based on this exciting and promising new approach as a potential new therapy to improve cognition, learning and memory in individuals with Down syndrome.

Just last month, Roche, a leader in research-focused healthcare and the world’s largest biotech firm, announced the initiation of its first Phase 1, multi-site clinical trial to investigate the safety and tolerability of a molecule designed to address the cognitive and behavioral deficits associated with Down syndrome. This progress was literally unimaginable when our first Rompers started romping in 2006.

Over $7 million dollars has been granted by DSRTF on research efforts over the last six years. The Romp For Research, by itself, has provided nearly $1.4 million towards these efforts . . . it may be the largest Down syndrome fundraising event in the World.

We cannot thank you enough for all that you have done to support us as we look forward to a world where people with Down syndrome are more participatory in school, the workplace and society at large. One look around at the Romp for Research tells you all you need to know about the passion and potential of people in the Down syndrome community.

And while the Romp is always great fun, we know that our mission is serious and we are laser-focused on making it a reality. Again, none of this is possible without all of you. Thank you for all that you have done and thank you for staying connected to our journey in the future.

<img decoding="async" width="620" height="110" class=" wp-image-157 aligncenter" alt=""
