Volunteer Spotlight: Denise Colon
GiGi’s NYC proudly recognizes Denise Colon as a standout volunteer! Since our Career Development Programs began in 2023, Denise has generously contributed her time and effort to support the success of every student. Her kindness, empathy, and resourcefulness make her an invaluable member of our team, and we deeply appreciate her dedication. Read below to discover more about her!
How and when did you first get involved with GiGi’s NYC? I started as a volunteer in September 2023 for GiGi Prep.
Why did you decide to volunteer with GiGi’s NYC? I was seeking continued opportunities to work with children and adults with special needs.
How did you find out about GiGi’s NYC? I looked up online volunteer opportunities in my area.
What does GiGi’s NYC mean to you? A caring place with the opportunity and privilege to connect and partner with a special community, and a sense of giving back…hopefully uplifting others.
What do you do as a volunteer? Assist classroom educator Megan, ensure that all participants are engaged and working towards their goals, friendly problem-solving and conflict resolution as needed. Making sure to have fun… help with lunch/cooking sessions, going on field trips…
What is your favorite thing about the GiGi’s NYC community? Warmth, love, laughter, curiosity, commitment to learning new things, breaking barriers…
What does Down syndrome awareness and acceptance look like to you? Understanding and embracing differences and seeing the beauty of and strength in all individuals.
What is the best part about volunteering with GiGi’s NYC? The feeling of being part of a community of caring, special people. I enjoy one-to-one tutoring, cooking, trouble-shooting and field trips.
How do you enjoy spending your free time? Tap dancing, jogging, horseback riding, taking walks with my dogs, Riley and Ellie, and providing equine-assisted therapy on the weekends to adults in need.
What would you like GiGi’s NYC community to know? KEEP DREAMING BIG!
