Are You Ready to Spring Ahead?

Blog Series: Words of Wisdom

I am ready to spring ahead! I like when it gets dark after 7 pm. There are a couple of holidays in the month of March. The holidays are National Oreo Cookie Day, National Meatball Day, International Women’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Holi and World Down Syndrome Day. Passover and Easter sometimes happen in March depending on the religious calendars. Daylight savings time also occurs in March.

National Oreo Cookie Day is celebrated on March 6th. The Oreo cookie was introduced to people on March 6, 1912. It is 110 years old. Did you celebrate  National Oreo Cookie Day? Oreos make a lot of people smile.

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th. People celebrate this day to celebrate women. It is to celebrate a woman’s right to vote and to end discrimination against women. It was first observed in 1914.  It is to show the world women are as strong as men.

National Meatball Day is celebrated on March 9th. We are not sure who, why and when this day was created.  It was probably by someone who loves meatballs. Meatballs were first made in China in the second century B.C. They have been around for a long time.

Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th. St. Patrick’s Day is to honor St. Patrick, the patron Saint of Ireland. People have parties, go to the parade, eat corned beef and cabbage, dance and drink on this day. Many people also wear the color green. I love St. Patrick’s Day because my step grandma is Irish and we celebrate every year.

Holi is the Hindu spring festival. It was celebrated on March 18th this year.  It celebrates the changing of the seasons from winter to spring and good winning over evil.  People throw brightly colored powder and scented water at each other during this festival.

World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated on March 21st.  It is a day to honor people who have Down syndrome. This day is important to educate people about this diagnosis. It helps the world see that we are more alike than different, and that we can do anything we put our mind to. People with Down syndrome have a lot to offer the world. World watch out, I am getting ready to show you what I can accomplish! Remember to donate to GiGi’s Playhouse NYC. This organization helps people with Down syndrome achieve their dreams and goals. They provide many resources and classes at no cost.

Daylight savings time occurs in most of the United States. It starts on the second Sunday in March. It ends on the first Sunday in November. Daylight savings time was started to help save energy. In the spring, we move the clocks ahead one hour and in the fall we move the clocks back one hour. I only like daylight savings time in the spring because I hate when it gets dark so early.

These holidays are why I love spring. Spring is mostly about going out to enjoy the nice weather and watch the birds fly in the sky in the park. There are a lot of fun outdoor activities during the spring season like having picnics, going for walks, tennis, jogging, jump roping and hopscotch. I like to spend my free time helping my family with spring cleaning at home. We organize the closets, mop, dust and wash the windows. I love to keep the windows open to get the fresh air in and make the house smell like spring. After we finish our spring cleaning, my mom treats us by taking us out to lunch or dinner. One of my favorite restaurants to go to is called Antonio‘s.

I went to a restaurant called Antonio’s. My friend Danny is the manager and the food is great. They have great pizza, pasta and daily specials. When I was there I ordered rigatoni with broccoli rabe and sausage. It was so delicious that I couldn’t stop eating it. The staff is very friendly and nice.

I hope you have a great spring!  Until next month.

Be well and lots of love and happiness!

Love,

Fatima

😊. I never heard of the holiday name Holi.
It’s sounds beautiful. I’m going to read more about it because you brought it to my attention.
And secondly, I never knew meatballs were invented in China! I thought my Grandma invented them. Hahahahaha
