October is Down Syndrome\u00a0<\/span>Awareness and\u00a0<\/span>Acceptance Month<\/span>, and<\/span>\u00a0at\u00a0GiGi\u2019s\u00a0Playhouse, everyone in the community is gathering together to celebrate the sheer awesomeness of those who have an extra chromosome.\u00a0<\/span>GiGi’s\u00a0Playhouse New Orleans opened its doors in October 2020, giving us two reasons to celebrate during this wonderful month: Down Syndrome Acceptance and our one-year anniversary!\u00a0<\/span>This month,\u00a0GiGi’s\u00a0Playhouse New Orleans is inviting everyone to create change through one small action: Taking\u00a0the \u201cI Accept You\u201d pledge! Will you join us?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By taking the pledge, you will become a part of #GenerationG, an army of change-makers dedicated to making the world a better place for all. Every individual who takes the pledge vows to be accepting, compassionate, and kind every day in every way. You’ll be able to show the world that you believe in inclusion by drawing a heart with a “G” inside on the palm of your hand and posting it on all of your social media platforms!<\/span>\u00a0Tag your friends to join the movement with the hashtags #GenerationG #GiGisPlayhouse #GiGisNOLA.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Down Syndrome Awareness Month?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The National Down Syndrome Society\u00a0<\/span>established October as\u00a0<\/span>the month of\u00a0<\/span>Down\u00a0syndrome\u00a0<\/span>awareness in the 1980s. The month is significant because it raises\u00a0awareness and knowledge of Down syndrome<\/span>\u00a0(DS)<\/span>, as well as promotes advocacy\u00a0and inclusion\u00a0across the community. It is about emphasizing\u00a0the abilities of individuals with\u00a0<\/span>DS<\/span>\u00a0rather\u00a0than their\u00a0<\/span>disabilities<\/span>, because\u00a0<\/span>people\u00a0<\/span>born with\u00a0<\/span>the diagnosis<\/span>\u00a0may definitely live long and happy lives,\u00a0and\u00a0contribute\u00a0to society.\u00a0<\/span>Even if people do not contribute to society in the traditional sense, they are still worthy of love and acceptance as human beings.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At\u00a0GiGi’s\u00a0Playhouse, we take it a step further and declare October to be Down Syndrome\u00a0<\/span>ACCEPTANCE<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Month! It’s our method of moving beyond passive learning and caring and into active learning and caring. And the greatest way to demonstrate you care is to take the “I Accept You\u201d\u00a0pledge with #GenerationG!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why does it matter to me?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because you have the ability to make a difference! By adopting the “I Accept You” pledge and becoming a part of #GenerationG, you will be able to encourage more people to learn about\u00a0<\/span>Down syndrome,\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0celebrate individuals who live with it.\u00a0They deserve acceptance, care,\u00a0<\/span>inclusion,\u00a0<\/span>and respect, and by taking the pledge, you will be a part in making that a reality. And #GenerationG is about more than just welcoming people with Down syndrome\u2014 it’s acceptance for ALL people!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What other actions can I take?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0IAcceptYou.org<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>movement\u00a0<\/span>is a global campaign, so by becoming a part of it you would be spreading it to the wor<\/span>l<\/span>d!\u00a0<\/span>On the campaign webpage<\/span>, you’ll discover tools to help you and your friends,\u00a0<\/span>fellow\u00a0<\/span>students, and coworkers advocate for Down syndrome acceptance during the month of October. You can become an advocate in a variety of ways, including participating in\u00a0GiGi’s\u00a0<\/span>Playhouse events\u00a0<\/span>during the month of October, encouraging employers to hire someone with Down\u00a0syndrome,\u00a0performing acts of kindness, starting a conversation about Down syndrome, and many more! Encourage your employer, school, or friends to join the movement and follow\u00a0GiGi\u2019s\u00a0Playhouse on social media and share posts and stories of acceptance with the hashtags #GenerationG #GiGisPlayhouse #GiGisNOLA.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
