data-contrast=\"none\">volunteers\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and self-advocates, Maya\u00a0Greengus\u00a0and Sadler Bell, have set out on a mission to use their voices\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in our community\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to advocate for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">individuals\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">with Down syndrome.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">In October of 2020, Maya and Sadler suggested<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">starting an advocacy group, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">they\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">have since bec<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">me the Co-Leaders of the first Advocate Committee at\u00a0GiGi\u2019s\u00a0Playhouse<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Madison<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span teenager\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">when she and her mom would volunteer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0at\u00a0GiGi\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Now as a college student, Maya is looking to give back to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">our<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0community.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cI think it\u2019s cool to be an advocate for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">people with Down syndrome.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">An advocate is someone who helps others fit into the world, someone who stands up and gets involved to help other<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">comes from a family of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0advoca<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">tes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Growing up in the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">South in the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">90\u2019s, Sadler remembers attending\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">middle\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">school when individuals with disabilities were segregated\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">into different classrooms.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">All the kids with disabilities, no matter what they had, they would be in one classroom all together all day long.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">His parents strongly advocated for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">inclusion on behalf of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sadler\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">was one of the first in his community to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">attend\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">general<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0education high school classes with his peers.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Together,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Maya and Sadler<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">developed the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">important<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0mission of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Advocate Committee<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">:<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">To collaborate and advocate for inclusiveness and acceptance, making sure all voices are valued so we can make a difference for families in our community.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Their top three goals\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to accomplish\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">this year include talking to volunteers and others in the community to share experiences about Down syndrome, to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">spread\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">GiGi\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and the Advocate Committee\u2019s mission<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">via<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0social media, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">promot<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">special days and events<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">such as World Down Syndrome Day coming up on March 21<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">st<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span Board\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">meeting and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">inspired our directors by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">shar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">enthusiasm and commitment to their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">mission and goals<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.
