The <\/span>GiGi's<\/span> Playhouse 1:1 Literacy Tutoring Program uses a methodology with documented success based on research by professionals in the field. <\/span><\/span>The ability to read opens doors for individuals with Down syndrome in the workplace, schools and the community.\u00a0<\/span><\/span> Developing reading skills also leads to improvements in speech and language development, auditory perceptual skills and working memory function.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Our goal is to foster a love for reading and provide an opportunity to develop and master skills, all while building a positive relationship with our volunteer tutors.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Trained tutors work at the level of the child, continually challenging and encouraging him\/her to reach their Best of All.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0 Students can start in our program as early as age 3 or any year after that. I<\/span><\/span>t's never too late to start!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0 Weekly lessons last 45-60 minutes for 10-15 weeks at a time.\u00a0 Family members attend each tutoring session and leave with practical activities to continue the learning at home.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\t

- Teach with a multi-sensory approach to <\/span>build confidence and reinforce learning.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n
- Teach students to \u202f<\/span>practice, \u202ftransfer\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and\u202f\u00a0<\/span>generalize<\/span><\/b>\u202f newly learned skills.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- Teach students to <\/span>comprehend and use information gained<\/span><\/b> from reading to apply to their real-world experiences.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Books and tutoring resources are customized to each student\u2019s interest and abilities and are built based on the ways in which individuals with Down syndrome learn best.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>We begin at a student\u2019s current ability and build from that point.\u00a0 <\/span>Purposeful progressions<\/span><\/b> lead to an increase of skills and self-confidence.
