Volunteers That Bring Unique Experiences

Oliva Marcell- Volunteer and Edgewood College Cutting Edge Student

Olivia Marcell- Volunteer and College Student who has big plans for her future

Please meet Olivia Marcell. We are excited to introduce you to her so we did a mini interview to learn more about her.

  • What are you studying at Edgewood College?

At Edgewood College, I am in the Cutting Edge Program pursuing my Paraprofessional Certificate in Education.

You can learn more about this program HERE. It was the first program at a four-year college in Wisconsin to offer a fully inclusive college experience for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

  • How long have you been a student there?

I have been a student at Edgewood for three years, so I am a Junior.  I took a full course load each semester, so I will graduate this May.  A whole year early!

  • What is your favorite part of the Cutting Edge program?

My favorite part of the Cutting Edge Program is being able to be an independent college student.  I am grateful that I can go to college and get the support I need to be successful even though I have a learning disability.

  • Why did you decide to volunteer with GiGi’s Playhouse?

I  decided to volunteer at GiGi’s Playhouse because I want to help individuals with disabilities learn to be independent, healthy and have fun.  Kelly (our Site Director) came to one of my Cutting Edge classes to give a presentation about GiGi’s.  I was inspired and asked how I could become a volunteer.

  • What’s your favorite part about volunteering with GiGi’s?

My favorite part about volunteering  at GiGi’s is being at the Playhouse helping out and seeing the participants smile and be themselves.

  • What do you plan to do after you graduate?

After I graduate in May, I plan to work as a Paraeducator (teacher’s assistant) for the D.C. Everest School District in one of their elementary school special education classrooms.  I want to continue to be independent which means eventually living in my own home.

  • What is your dream job?

My dream job is to be a Paraeducator in an elementary school special education classroom helping students like myself overcome their challenges and obstacles.

Olivia has volunteered at the Madison Playhouse for a couple years and even volunteered with the Wausau Playhouse one Summer because it’s close to her home.

Our Site Director, Kelly, shared that Olivia is an amazing volunteer! This session she is volunteering up to 3 days a week and takes on every task with a smile. She has a unique ability to work with all the participants, volunteers and staff in an always enthusiastic and friendly manner.

We believe her chosen career path will be PERFECT for but we sure are going to miss her around the Playhouse when she graduates!
